Last-second 3-pointer spoils Hawks' upset bid

A 3-point bucket at the buzzer was all that stood between Lamar State College Port Arthur and an upset over No. 6-ranked South Plains College in the second day of the Texas East-West Challenge in Plano on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019 as the Seahawks fell 66-65.

Rivaldo Soares hit a 3-pointer with a second left on the clock to put South Plains College over the Seahawks, who fell to 2-2 for the season with the loss.

Sophomore Jamyus Jones led all scorers in the game, hitting for 24 points while soph Devaughn Thomas added 18 points with seven rebounds to help keep the Seahawks close throughout the game. Redshirt sophomore Darrell Jones also had seven boards for the Seahawks.

The Hawks return to the Carl Parker Center for a three-game home stand that starts with a game Tuesday, Nov. 12, against LSU-Eunice, followed by a Friday, Nov. 15, showdown against Baton Rouge Community College. The Seahawks open NJCAA Region 14 play with a game against Tyler Junior College on Saturday, Nov. 23.
