Sophomores J'Son Brooks and Ferontay Banks drove Lamar State College Port Arthur back into Winners' Lane Monday evening.

The two Louisiana natives teamed up to score 31 points in a 76-59 win over Louisiana Christian School at the Seahawks' New Years Classic at the Carl Parker Center.

The 6-foot-7 Brooks, a starter most of the season, scored a season-high 18 points and grabbed six rebounds against the Breaux Bridge post-grad academy while Banks, a point guard making his first start of the season, scored 13, hitting 2 for 4 from behind the 3-point arc.

Port Arthur sophomores Jamyus Jones and Darion Chatman scored nine and eight points, respectively, as LSCPA improved to 5-8 on the season, ending a three-game losing streak in their first game since Dec. 7.

"I thought it was a good win," Seahawks coach Lance Madison said. "We've been off for three weeks, and I knew we'd be a little flat.

"But Jase [Brooks] probably had his best game scoring-wise and Ferontay Banks also played well for us."

Brooks scored in double digits for the Seahawks in three of the season's first five games but hadn't reached double digits since. Banks was freshman of the year in the NAIA Division I Red River Conference last season but until Monday hadn't scored in double digits in limited action.

"He [Banks] has had some pretty good days of practice," Madison said, explaining the change of his lineup. "I knew he was a talented player, but he hadn't gotten into his comfort zone with us. I was glad to see him play up to his potential."

Lamar State Port Arthur returns to the Parker Center Tuesday at 4 p.m. to play Lafayette's CM Prep in the final game of the Classic.
