Navarro College's Netflix-featured cheerleaders got a lot of chances to flip and shout Saturday as the Bulldog basketball team put on a shooting display to defeat Lamar State College Port Arthur 95-70 in Corsicana, Texas.

The Bulldogs improved to 5-2 in Region 14 play and 11-7 overall while the Seahawks stand at 2-5, 8-10 after ending a nine-day stretch that included four games and three road trips totaling about 28 hours of bus travel.

Port Arthur sophomore Jamyus Jones led the Seahawks with 21 points and Louisiana sophomores Devaughn Thomas and J'Son Brooks each scored a dozen points.

But Navarro hit on eight first-half 3-pointers and led by as many as 26 points before taking a 55-33 lead into the halftime intermission.

"They hadn't shot the ball like that all year," Seahawks Coach Lance Madison said. "They were shooting about 25 percent for threes as a team, but I bet they shot 75 percent in the first half."

Thomas, Jones and Brooks, Lamar State's leading scorers for the season, pushed their team to within 12 points midway through the second half but could get no closer.

Akol Mawein, a 6-foot-9 freshman from Australia, led Navarro with 22 points.

The Seahawks return home to play at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15 against Coastal Bend College to begin their 12-game double round robin against South Zone opponents.

Coastal Bend is coming off a Saturday upset win over 14th-ranked Panola College.
