Sophomore Darrell Jones became the seventh Seahawk player this season to score at least 20 points in a game but couldn't stave off an overpowering second half by Jacksonville College, which won an 88-74 victory over Lamar State College Port Arthur Tuesday night.

The 6-foot-2 guard Nederland High grad hit 7 of 12 shots from the field and 6 of 7 from the free-throw stripe to finish with an even 20 as the Hawks' only player to reach double digits.

Teammates Devaughn Thomas and Kanntrell Burney each scored nine points in the game at Jacksonville and Seahawks Darion Chatman and Terron Brown added eight points apiece.

Lamar State's record slipped to 14-15 overall, 8-10 in Region 14 play and into a tie with Jacksonville for third place in the South Zone. Blinn College, the Seahawks' opponent in their final regular season game at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Carl Parker Center, nailed down second with a win over South Zone leader Angelina College Wednesday.

Jacksonville improved to 15-14 overall by scoring 60 second-half points, including nine 3-point bombs in the final 20 minutes. Jevon Westcarth hit 12 of 18 shots, four of them treys, and sank 10 of 11 free throws in scoring 38 points for the Jaguars.

The Seahawks led 32-28 at halftime but committed 13 second-half turnovers.

Henry Hampton buried a 3-ball to open the second half for Jacksonville and after a 40-40 tie five minutes into the final half, the Jags went on a 28-6 run to lead by 22, 68-46, with 9:15 left to play.

Led by West Orange-Stark freshman Brown, the Seahawk second line cut a 25-point, 79-54, deficit with 5:27 to play down to 10 points, 81-71, with 1:49 remaining.
