It was a matter of long range vs. long time Saturday at the Carl Parker Center.
Lamar State Seahawks sophomore Jamyus Jones sank seven 3-pointers and just missed an a school record while he and his teammates combined for 15 of the bonus balls on Sophomore Day.
But the long time was as in the Seahawks went a really long time – 8 minutes – before scoring a point in the second half and Blinn College took advantage for a 79-68 win.
Jones finished with 21 points on 7 of 15 shooting, all but one of those attempts from behind the 3-point arc. The school single-game record for 3-pointers is eight by Charles "Tre" Bennett in a 2014 game against Lee College.
The 15 treys in a single game by the Seahawks is believed to be a school record.
The Seahawks finished the regular season fourth in the South Zone, but that 8-10 league record was only good enough for No. 10 seeding in next week's NJCAA Region 14 tournament at Centenary University in Shreveport, Louisiana.
No official pairings had been announced Saturday night, but Lamar State, 14-16 overall, is expected to play No. 7 seed, 18-12 Trinity Valley College, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 3.
In January, the Seahawks beat Trinity Valley 79-67 on its homecourt in Athens, Texas, the only time the two teams met this year. A win Tuesday would advance the Seahawks to a second-round game Thursday. The tournament wraps up Saturday.
Ten of the 14 players on the Seahawks roster throughout the season were recognized after Saturday's game, their final game at the Parker Center.
The list included the team's top four scorers for the season, Devaughn Thomas, Jamyus Jones, Darrell Jones and J'Son Brooks, as well as Darion Chatman, Ferontay Banks, Xavier Thompson, Justice Vaughn, Byron Arceneaux and Clarence Miller.
Saturday, Brooks and Thompson joined Jamyus Jones as double-digit scorers, finishing with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Tristan Ipke led Blinn with 16 points.
The Buccaneers outrebounded the Seahawks 45-28 and Jamyus Jones led LSCPA with five rebounds.
Blinn led by nine points midway through the first half and again with four minutes to go before the Seahawks closed things to 41-40, Blinn, at the half thanks to a pair of treys by Thompson and one by Chatman.
But the Bucs took advantage of 0-for-10 shooting and four turnovers by Lamar State to go on a 12-0 run to open the second half.
It was 53-40 before Thompson hit two free throws with 11:53 left in the game. Blinn led by as many as 16 down the stretch and the closest the Seahawks could get was six points, 65-59, with 4:56 left.
