It appeared that Lamar State College Port Arthur had found an answer to a two-game losing streak in Florida this week. Gulf Coast College came back for a big second half push for an 85-81 decision, leaving the Seahawks questioning just what went wrong.

The Hawks came to the Pensacola State College Tournament with a perfect 6-0 record but left with three losses after falling to the Commodores on Wednesday afternoon at Hartsell Arena in Florida. After losing to Northwest Florida State 92-60 on Monday and host team Pensacola State 56-51 on Tuesday, it looked like the Seahawks had finally come around, leading the Commodores Wednesday 42-33 at the halftime break. The Hawks also outdid Gulf Coast State 20-15 in rebounding, forced 11 Commodores turnovers, and outshot GCS 50 percent to 25 percent from the 3-point line. Kanntrell Burney led the Seahawks with 12 points in the first 20 minutes while Daniel Braster added nine points and 8 rebounds before the break.

But LSCPA couldn't find the momentum again heading into the second half as Jammy Pierre-Louis led Gulf Coast State to a 13-point advantage over the final 20 minutes for the four-point victory. Pierre-Louis finished with a game-best 27 points.

Evan Palmquist, who scored 7 points in the first half, came alive after the break to lead the Seahawks with 24 points with two steals, four rebounds and three assists. Braster finished with his third consecutive double-double, scoring 19 with 14 boards against the Commodores. Burney ended up with 15 points and six rebounds, while Kharee McDaniel scored 11 with four assists.

The Seahawks open NJCAA Region 14 play with back-to-back road trips to Panola College on Wednesday, December 1, at 7 p.m. and Tyler Junior College on Saturday, December 4, at 4 p.m.
