Bentravin Phillips scored 29 points in his game against Coastal Bend College on Saturday. None of them were as clutch as the two free throws he calmly hit with 1.1 second left to ensure an 88-86 NJCAA Region 14 victory.

Phillips led the Seahawks at the Carl Parker Center, adding 12 assists to earn a double-double performance as LSCPA improved to 12-12 overall and 5-10 in conference play. The Cougars, who had won five of their last six games coming into their contest against the Seahawks, fall to 14-12 and 5-10.

The Seahawks face the league-leading Lee College Navigators on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. game at the Parker Center. They'll hit the road again for a 4 p.m. game at Angelina College in Lufkin on Saturday, February 24.

In Saturday's game against the Cougars, LSCPA ran out to as much as a 15-point lead in the first half, leaving Coastal Bend reeling at the quick offensive domination by the Hawks. Eventually, though, the Coogs came back to within two points at 43-41 at the halftime break.

The rest of the game was a series of runs by each team as Coastal Bend took a lead midway through the second half with LSCPA rebounding to retake the lead again. The game came down to the wire, tied 86-86 with Phillips drove the left side of the basket, missing the shot but drawing the foul to put him at the line with 1.1 second left. Having only missed 1 of 16 free throw attempts in the game, the smart bet was on Phillips knocking down both, which he did, looking more like he was shooting a pickup game in his back yard than in a critical Region 14 game.

Phillips was helped by Caleb Muller's 22 points as he hit 6 of 12 from the 3-point arc, adding five rebounds. Davon Wright, who joined the team after the winter break, scored 12 with four rebounds for the Seahawks.

The Cougars were led by Jeremiah Andereson's 28 points and 12 rebounds, while Reyce Allen added 17 points with six rebounds.
