Lance Madison became the Seahawks’ basketball coach after accepting the position offered by Lamar State College Port Arthur Athletic Director Scott Street on Saturday, May 12, 2012.

Coach Madison, after 11 seasons at LSCPA, is now 191-145 overall as a head coach, giving him an impressive .568 win percentage.

Madison came to LSCPA from Oklahoma City University where he served one year as assistant coach for the OCU Stars, members of the Sooners Athletic Conference in the NAIA Division I. During the 2011-2012 season, the Stars finished with a 12-15 record, falling to national runner-up Oklahoma Baptist University in overtime in the Sooners Conference tournament.

He made his way to OCU after two seasons as men’s basketball assistant coach at Hutchinson, Kan., for Steve Eck. The tradition-rich Blue Dragons finished 26-7, ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA poll, in second place in regular-season league play and in the NJCAA Region VI semifinals in 2010-11. During Madison’s first season in Hutchinson, the Blue Dragons were 27-6 with another second-place showing and semifinal finish. While there, Lance coached All-American Joe Mitchell.

Prior to Hutchinson, Madison spent two seasons at Cowley County, Kan. In two seasons at Cowley, Madison’s record was 60-8, including a school-record 31 victories in 2007-08. Cowley won a pair of Jayhawk Conference East championships and appeared in two Region VI championship games and was ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA. Lance coached another All-American while at Cowley County in Montrel McDonald.

Before Cowley, Madison was at the University of Texas-Pan American, an NCAA Division I program. During the 2006-07 season, Madison helped the Broncs improve from six wins in the previous season to 14 wins. The eight-win improvement was the biggest turnaround in the state of Texas for college basketball.

During 2005-06, Madison served on the coaching staff at the University of Texas at San Antonio. With with the Roadrunners, he served as the recruiting coordinator of junior-college prospects from the states of Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois and Iowa. In his lone season at UTSA, Madison helped the Roadrunners qualify for the Southland Conference Tournament.

Prior to coaching at UTSA, Madison served three seasons as an associate head coach with Eck at Redlands Community College in El Reno, Okla. Madison helped the Cougars post a stellar 94-9 record in his three seasons with the program. Redlands advanced to the 2004 NJCAA Division I national championship game and was ranked No. 1 in the polls.

During his time at Redlands, he helped the program capture a trio of Bi-State West Conference Championships along with a pair of NJCAA Tournament appearances and Region II crowns. While there, Lance coached All-Americans Taj Gray, Brandon Polk and Sylvester Mayes.

Madison spent five seasons at Olney Central (Ill.), an NJCAA Division I program, from 1996-2002 where he served as an assistant men’s basketball coach. The Knights posted 20 or more wins all five seasons. He also guided the softball program.

He began his coaching career at Vincennes (Ind.), an NJCAA Division I program, during the 1992-93 season, where he served as an assistant for Hall of Fame Coach Dan Sparks.

During his playing career, Madison was at Vincennes for two seasons, leading the team to an NJCAA Tournament appearance as a sophomore. He later transferred to Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, where he was a two-year letter winner and team captain as a senior.
