Trailing by two runs with two outs in the final inning, Lamar State College Port Arthur put together a rally to claim a 6-5 win over Galveston College in the first game of an NJCAA Region 14 doubleheader Thursday at Martin Field.
The Seahawks improved their record to 14-18 overall and 5-8 in conference play, while Galveston College fell to 10-24 and 5-8.
The Whitecaps went up 4-0 heading into the bottom half of the fifth inning when the Seahawks collected three runs, two of those coming on a two-run home run by Elicia Gonzales.
Jessica Saenz singled to open the fifth for the Hawks, replaced by pinch-runner Patty Ortiz. Vanessa Espitia hit a sacrifice bunt to move Ortiz to second. Gonzales came on next to collect her home run shot for a 4-2 difference in the game.
Brooke Smith doubled and Britni Hunt singled Smith home for a 4-3 score. Taylor Frederick singled to put Hunt at second but a ground-out ended the inning for the Seahawks.
Galveston got a run back in the top of the seventh to take a 5-3 lead and it looked like the Whitecaps would escape with the win after the first two Seahawks batters sat down in succession in the bottom of the seventh.
Rebecca Delome walked, with Frederick, Makasha Brown and Olivia Rivera each collecting singles to score a run and leave the bases loaded.
In the next two at-bats, the Galveston pitcher lost control, hitting both Saenz and Espitia to push home the game-tying run and game-winning run.
Frederick and Smith were each 3 for 4 in the game with a double apiece to lead the Seahawks' batting. Espitia was hit twice in the game, finishing 1 for 1 with the game-winning RBI.
Hunt got the complete-game pitching victory, improving her overall record to 9-6 with a 4-4 mark in conference. She allowed five runs, four earned, on 10 hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Galveston's first two hits of the game were home runs but Hunt settled in and wouldn't allow another extra-base hit for the rest of the game.
