Saenz clinches win on the hill, leads Hawks to 7-5 decision over NCTC

FORT WORTH – Lamar State College Port Arthur nearly escaped with a sweep of its second day of play at the Cowtown Classic on Saturday. The Seahawks won their afternoon game over North Central Texas College 7-5 but just missed out on the sweep after falling to Weatherford College 3-2 in the early game.

The Hawks are now 4-4 for the season with their first home doubleheader of the year coming on Tuesday when they face non-conference foe Bossier Parish Community College starting at 1 p.m. on Martin Field on the LSCPA campus.

The Hawks exploded for seven runs over the first two innings of play, then held on for the win as they amassed 13 hits to secure the victor over North Central Texas College 7-5.

Rivera was 3 for 4 at the plate with a double, two runs scored and two RBI, while freshman Elicia Gonzales went 3 for 4 at the plate with a double, a run scored and a run batted in for the Seahawks. Sophomore Taylor Frederick doubled on a 2-for-3 performance with an RBI, while Lilly Renteria, a sophomore, was 1 for 4 with a double. Freshman Brooke Smith picked up her first triple of the year.

Freshman pitcher Kassandra Vargas started the game on the hill, eventually throwing two innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits. Sophomore Jessica Saenz finished the game with a punctuation mark, holding NCTC to two runs on four hits over five innings to earn her first victory of the year.
