Lamar State College Port Arthur went up early but couldn't hold on as Laredo rebounded from a 14-1 Game 1 loss to take an 11-8 win in the second game of the NJCAA Region 14 doubleheader on Friday, March 29 in Port Arthur.

The Seahawks picked up two runs in the first inning when Rebecca DeLome followed a pair of singles by Brooke Smith and Britni Hunt to score one, then Olivia Rivera hit a sacrifice fly to left to score another.

Laredo responded with a run in the top of the second inning, adding four more in the fifth. The Seahawks came back to score four in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-5 lead.

Elicia Gonzales doubled to start the fifth for the Hawks but was caught stealing. Smith walked and Hunt reached on an error to put runners at first and second. With two outs, Taylor Frederick doubled to score Smith and put Hunt at third. Rivera followed with a double to left to score Hunt and Frederick. Madeline Stone singled to give the Seahawks the 6-5 lead when Rivera made her way from second to score.

Looking at two outs in the sixth inning, Laredo rallied to score four runs to take a 9-6 advantage. LSCPA picked up a run in the bottom of the inning when Gonzales singled and later came home on a single by Hunt.

Laredo added two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh for an 11-7 lead. The Seahawks put together a rally of their own in the bottom half of the seventh, scoring a two-out run when Vanessa Espitia singled home Rivera, who had reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning.

The Hawks had 13 hits but allowed 17 Laredo hits while committing four fielding errors to help Laredo's cause.

Frederick went 3 for 4 with a double to lead the Hawks at the plate, while Gonzales went 2 for 3 with a double and Hunt finished 2 for 4 with two runs scored and a run batted in.

Freshman pitcher Kassandra Vargas took the loss after allowing nine runs, seven earned on 11 hits. Saenz finished the game, allowing two earned runs on six hits.
