Lamar State College Port Arthur out-hit Texas Lutheran Univesity 13-12 but couldn't convert those hits into enough runs as TLU escaped with a 10-6 win at the Coastal Bend College Classic on Saturday, Jan. 26.

TLU jumped out 2-0 after two innings before LSCPA put three runs on the board to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the third.

With two outs and Elicia Gonzales on base after a walk and Olivia Rivera aboard on a single, the Seahawks tied the game on a double by Brooke Smith that plated Gonzales and Rivera. Jessica Saenz followed with a run-scoring double to get Smith home for a 3-2 advantage.

Texas Lutheran added a run in the third and three more in the fourth to take a 7-3 lead.

Three straight singles by Patty Ortiz, Makasha Brown and Lilly Renteria resulted in an RBI for Renteria in the sixth to give LSCPA its fourth run. Rebecca DeLome hit a line drive single later in the inning to score Brown to pull the Seahawks to within two at 7-5.

The Hawks added another run in the top of the seventh when Renteria singled to bring home Vanessa Espitia. It was enough of an answer to TLU's three runs scored in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Renteria, Smith, Ortiz and Brown each had two hits with Smith and Jessica Saenz hitting doubles.

Britini Hunt started in the circle for the Seahawks, throwing two innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Saenz came on in relief, working 2.1 innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on two hits with one walk. Kassandra Vargas closed out the pitching effort for the Seahawks, allowing three earned runs on six hits in 1.2 innings of work.
