Smith collects walk-off single in 8-7 win over Shelton State

Freshman Brooke Smith hit a walk-off single that gave Lamar State College Port Arthur an 8-7 win over Shelton State Community College in the second day of the Faulkner State Sun Chief Classic in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

Smith's line drive single to left plated Patty Ortiz in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Hawks opened the inning tied 7-7 with Madeline Stone leading off with a single. Patty Ortiz came is as a pinch-runner, moving to second on a ground out. Smith's single came with two hits following a hit-by-pitch plate appearance by Jessica Saenz.

Shelton State went up 3-0 through three innings with LSCPA scoring its first run in the bottom of the third. Smith opened the inning with a single, followed by Makasha Brown's single to put runners at the corners. Olivia Rivera hit a line drive to left to plate Smith for the Seahawks run.

Shelton State slapped a two-run home run in the fourth for a 5-1 lead. LSCPA answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the sixth for a 7-5 advantage.

Saenz led off the bottom of the fifth after being hit by a pitch. A fielder's choice moved Saenz to second with a strikeout leaving the Seahawks with two outs. Rebecca DeLome scored Saenz and then Olivia Rivera hit a two-run home run to put the Hawks up 5-4.

In the sixth, Taylor Frederick doubled and Brooke Smith singled Frederick home to tie the game at 5-5. After a Brown single and a Vanessa Espitia walk, Rivera singled to right to score Smith, giving LSCPA a 6-5 advantage. A passed ball with Britni Hunt at the plate allowed Brown to score for a 7-5 lead.

Shelton State tied the game in the top of the seventh on a two-out single.

Rivera finished the game 3 for 4 with a home run, four runs batted in and a run scored, while Smith was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

Kassandra Vargas pitched 3.2 innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Saenz worked 1.2 innings, allowing three hits with two strikeouts and a walk, while Britni Hunt earned the win, finished the final 1.2 innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
