Seahawks fall to UH-Victoria at Seguin Tournament

SEGUIN – Lamar State College Port Arthur got some fantastic individual effort in the opening day of the 2020 softball season but it wasn't enough to prevent a two-game sweep to start the season.

The Seahawks suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 decision to Our Lady of the Lake University in the first game of the Seguin College Tournament, falling 15-7 to the University of Houston-Victoria in the second game of the day.

The Hawks return to play in the second day of the Seguin College Tournament with games at 8 a.m. against Ranger College, 12:30 p.m. against UH-Victoria and 2:45 against host team Texas Lutheran University.

The Seahawks outhit the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars 10-9 but got blasted on the scoreboard after leaving nine on base in a 15-7 run-rule decision.

After giving up three runs in the first and 10 more in the third for a 13-0 deficit, the Seahawks put together a rebound, plating three in the fourth and four in the fifth to give the Jaguars a scare.

The Seahawks scored their first run on a bases-loaded walk and then Riley doubled home two more for the 13-3 difference in the fourth.

With singles coming from Grace Coffelt, Celeste Salazar and Alexa Garza, Maleia Taylor crushed a line drive grand slam home run to center field for the 13-7 mark on the scoreboard.

Erica Riley went 2 for 2 with two walks, Garza was 2 for 2 with a run and Taylor was 2 for 3 with four runs batted in and two runs scored in the game.

A trio of pitchers worked the circle, led off by Miranda Pollock who threw two innings with three unearned runs on two hits. Garza took over in the third, allowing 10 earned runs on four hits with nine walks, while Savanna Wise wrapped it up with two earned runs on three hits and a walk in 1.1 innings of work.
