Freshman Maleia Taylor slides into home plate for the game-tying run against Snead State College on Saturday, February 15, 2020.

Erica Riley fell just short of hitting for the cycle in leading Lamar State College Port Arthur to its first win of the 2020 season, a 4-3 decision over Snead State Community College in the Sun Chief Classic in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

Riley singled, doubled and tripled in going 3-4 with a run scored and three runs batted in, including crossing the plate for the winning run in the seventh inning.

Trailing 3-2 after six innings, the Seahawks orchestrated a two-out rally in the seventh as they faced defeat. Freshman Maleia Taylor singled on a hard grounder to left field. Riley followed with an RBI triple to tie the game at 3-3. Britni Hunt, who also picked up the win in the circle, singled to the third base side to plate Riley for what would eventually be the 4-3 final.

Hunt allowed a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh but that would be all Snead could muster earned her first pitching win of the year. She allowed nine hits for two earned runs with eight strikeouts and one walk in her appearance.

Taylor finished the game 2 of 4 with two runs scored while freshman Grace Coffelt went 2 for 3 at the plate for the Seahawks, who collected 11 hits overall. Sophomore Elicia Gonzales picked up a stolen base while pinch running.
