With the start of the 2021-2022 campaign, Gerry L. Dickert enters his 11th season as Sports Information Director at Lamar State College Port Arthur.

A lifelong resident of Southeast Texas, Dickert spent much of his career as a newspaper journalist before moving into marketing and public relations for LSCPA in July 2011.

His bylines have appeared in newspapers across the country, especially in the sports pages as he covered high school, college and professional level programs throughout his 38-year writing career. His stories have been published in The Dallas Morning News, Fort Worth Star Telegram, San Antonio Express News, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Houston Chronicle, San Francisco Chronicle and USA Today.

At Lamar State College Port Arthur, Dickert serves as Public Information Coordinator, working across all campus departments to produce marketing and public relations materials. He works with the college’s website, social media accounts and printed publications.

Dickert graduated from Kirbyville High School in 1985, working part time for the Kirbyville Banner, where he got his start in journalism.

From there, he joined the Mid-County Chronicle in Nederland, Texas, part of The Beaumont Enterprise Company. After a year in Mid-County, he moved to Lumberton, Texas and The Hardin County News, another Enterprise weekly newspaper.

After a seven-year stint as reporter, photographer and, ultimately, editor of the HCN, Dickert transferred to the daily Beaumont Enterprise as a sports writer. Over the next eight years, he worked in sports as a writer/photographer, assistant editor and editor before becoming managing editor over sports, features, photography, and page design.

In 2001, he ventured into magazines as publisher of The Legal News in Sulphur, Louisiana. After a year, the owners of the magazine opted to end the upstart project, sending Dickert back to Southeast Texas and The Beaumont Examiner.

Serving as editor of The Examiner, Dickert was part of a team that won regional, state and national newspaper industry awards.

In 2004, Dickert returned to Hardin County as editor, writer and photographer of The Silsbee Bee. The 6,300-circulation weekly newspaper won several Newspaper of the Year awards from the Texas Press Association and the Gulf Coast Press Association during his time there.

In addition to his regular “day job” responsibilities, Dickert owns GLD Designs, a graphic design and photography company that does freelance work. Through this company, Dickert has helped produce award-winning material for newspapers and magazines across the Southeast Texas region.

Dickert is a member of the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations, the Press Club of Southeast Texas and the College Sport Information Directors of America organization. He earned his associates degree in academic studies in 2016 from Lamar State College Port Arthur.

He is married to Maria Dickert and they live in Port Arthur, Texas. Together they have seven children and 12 grandchildren.
